Day 1: Arrival and transfer to Besalu

We pick you up at Girona airport or the train station (if you fly into Barcelona) and take you to your first hotel. The drive to Besalú takes about 30 minutes.

The medieval town of Besalú is known for its impressive Romanesque bridge and the remains of its Jewish past. The bridge is 1000 years old and leads you to the narrow cobbled streets. This picturesque city was used as a medieval setting in the series Game of Thrones.

You stay in a neoclassical hotel for adults (no children under 12 years old). From the swimming pool you have a beautiful view of the old chapel. You will find several restaurants on the cozy market square.

Day 2: TO THE ANCIENT PONT DE LLIERCA AND THE UNIQUE CASTELFOLLIT DE LA ROCA

In the morning you follow winding country roads through a forest. The churches and castles are reminders of the rich medieval past of the Garrotxa. You cycle past the castle of Argelaguer, a fortified castle of the lords of Montpalau. You drive through some sleepy villages such as Tortella and Montagut.

The first highlight is the 6 centuries old Pont de Llierca, a 3 meter wide Romanesque bridge over the river Llierca. In the 14th century, the sheep herders had to pay a toll here to be able to cross with their cattle.

Tip: do you like to walk? Cycle on to Sadernes and hike to the waterfall of Sant Aniol. At the end of this particularly beautiful walk you can take a dip in this little piece of paradise.

The next special highlight today is Castellfollit de la Roca. This is a medieval town on a cliff in the Garrotxa volcanic area. The narrow streets of this town lead you to the old church of Sant Salvador. Here you have an impressive vantage point with beautiful views.

Passing Sant Joan les Fonts, you follow the route from the 12th-century Benedictine Monastery to the fortified Juvinya Castle and past the 13th-century medieval bridge.

Next is Olot, where you cycle over an greenway, an old railway track that once connected Olot to Girona. In Olot you will find several buildings from the early Spanish Modernist period. You may want to visit the volcano museum or stop at the natural springs of San Roc.

You sleep in an authentic four star Masia, an oasis of peace.

Day 3: PASSING THE MAGICAL FAGEDA FOREST TO THE MEDIEVAL SANTA PAU

You start over green, rolling hill through the heart of the natural park La Garrotxa.

You pass old houses and rustic farms that fit perfectly with this volcanic and rugged landscape. This place is known for the Fageda d'en Jorda, a unique beech forest that has grown on the lava of the volcanoes. It looks a bit like a fairytale forest and was a source of inspiration for several artists.

You are now 8 km from your destination, Santa Pau. The heart of this well-preserved medieval town is the 13th century castle and the Placa Major with typical bars under a cozy arcaded gallery. The whole city is an "Artistic Historical Monument".

You sleep in the center in an authentic 4 star hotel. The building dates back to the 15th century and stands just inside the old city walls. It has a pool, a great restaurant and is the perfect location to discover the city! You will stay here for 2 nights.

Tip:

- discover the Fageda forest by horse and carriage - https://activitatsgarrotxa.com/activitats-a-la-garrotxa-carruatges/?lang=en

- do a balloon flight and see the volcanoes from above. A unique experience!

Day 4: VISIT THE ANCIENT EXTENDING VOLCANOES.

The region of La Garrotxa is known for its 40 extinct volcanoes and its beautiful ancient landscapes. Today you will discover 2 volcanoes by bike and on foot.

Via the Cycle Greenway you first visit the volcán de Croscat. This volcano is the youngest and highest volcano on the Iberian Peninsula. The last eruption of this horseshoe-shaped volcanic cone was about 14,000 years ago. You can read about it in the visitor center where you have a nice view of the carved part of the volcano.

After this you cycle through the magical Fageda forest, past some farms in the typical architectural style of this region. You will also pass some authentic Catalan lunch stops.

The second stop for today is the volcano of Santa Margarida.

In the crater of the volcano there is a small chapel, a very charming place to visit. The chapel was destroyed during an earthquake in 1428 and was rebuilt in 1865. Leave your bicycle in the parking lot and walk to the crater, bicycles are not allowed.

Day 5: PASSING THE WATERFALLS OF CAN BATTLE TO BANYOLES LAKE

You leave Santa Pau behind and cycle on winding asphalt roads. After a few kilometers you can discover a hidden gem.  A magical place with waterfalls known only to the locals.

Follow the winding road down past rolling fields and green hills. You can make a stop in the typical Catalan restaurant Can Met in Mieres.

You will arrive at Lake Banyoles, known for its crystal clear waters. This is where the rowing competitions were held during the 1992 Olympics. You can swim or take a boat trip.

You will spend the night again in a small-scale and charming country house.

Day 6: CONTINUE THROUGH THE HEART OF CATALONIA OR TO THE COAST

For your last 2 days you have the choice:

  • continue cycling through the so-called 'Golden Triangle' with its charming medieval villages
  • cycle to the unspoilt Costa Brava and spend your last days by the sea, for example in the picturesque town of Cadaques, hometown of Salvador Dali.
  • cycle via the col of Els Angels to the historic city of Girona, which you will visit on your last day

Catalonia is a surprisingly varied region in the North of Spain. It is unique because of its natural beauty, cultural sites and strategic location between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees.

Our cycling routes are located in the North of Catalonia, just across the French border. This is the most unspoilt part of the Costa Brava! You cycle or walk along desolate beaches and various nature reserves such as the Cap de Creus peninsula, the Montgri mountain range, the Isles Medes Marine Reserve and the Aguamolls Bird Sanctuary.

This region can be proud of its rich cultural heritage. The southern part is called the 'The Golden Triangle' for a reason. Ancient medieval villages, archaeological sites and museums take you back to ancient times. In the evening you stay in historic castles or haciendas that immerse you in authentic Catalonia.

3 stars Restaurant El Bulli also put this region on the Burgundian world map. The restaurant is closed, but several chefs now have their own restaurant where you can enjoy star-class tapas. And for the city trippers among you, vibrant Barcelona is only an hour and a half away by car.

This region has it all and the best way to discover this diversity, is through our vacations!
